Bombane's: from magical hats to Homework Club
Bom-Bane’s is, at first sight, a licensed cafe-restaurant in Brighton’s George Street, (not the Hove George Street), serving delicious home-made Belgian and other European dishes.   But when you book, be sure to mention which (moving) table you would like, the Aesop’s, the Tablerone, the TurnTable, the Twenty-seven Chimes, the Uns-Table or the Water table?  For this is the strange and wonderful cafe belonging to Jane Bom-Bane, Musician of the Moving Hats and Queen of the Funky Harmonium who enjoys entertaining
her customers.  Every month she hosts many a night of film, music and puppetry. Puppetry? Jane regularly appears at the Edinburgh Festival, as well as at her own cafe.  Famous stand-up comedian Stewart Lee (‘Officially the 41st Best Stand-up Ever’) caught her act in August 2012: “The best show I saw in the Edinburgh Fringe this year,” he said.  Lee appeared at Bombane’s during the Brighton Festival last month to support her.  Tickets were sold out within a few minutes.

Bom-Bane’s doesn’t stop after the Festival: every Monday in June, Jo Game and Linda May are offering workshops on Playing the Spoons, concert on the 30th.  Robin and Bina Williamson (at Bom-Bane’s on 7th June) were praised by Robert Plant, who called their act 'the highlight of the 2012 Acoustic Festival'. On Thursday 13th, Station Cloud 99 brings you folk singer/storyteller Peter Castle, Rosie and Bernd, and Tim Keegan. Sunday 16th June sees Clayson Sings Chanson. On the road since 2011, originally to tie in with the most recent edition of his Jacques Brel biography (the first in English), Clayson has been described as “a man possessed”, and The Independent just says: “It would be difficult to explain to the uninitiated what to expect.” Which is a good way to describe Bom-Bane’s itself.

The restaurant runs inspired regular events like the Homework Club every Wednesday after school from 4 to 6pm. Two experienced, patient and qualified homework supervisors are always available to help students who are stuck and Bombane’s provides a nutritious meal at the same time. The food is sourced from reputable local suppliers and prepared on the premises.

Following Wednesday’s Homework Club, Bombane’s offers Food and Film (to grown-ups) for a Flabbergasting £5.55! On Tuesdays and Thursdays they sometimes have music downstairs but not surprisingly, they specialise in parties of 10-40. You can sit at a long monastery table with lots of friends or on the back seat of a comfy old car in a cosy nook with one special one...

To see the Edinburgh show starring Jane Bom-Bane and Kate Daisy Grant (two award-winners for the price of one!) please book a two course meal (£15 a head) at the cafe for Friday 14th June on 01273 606400 or email Jane.  Stand-up Dave Gorman commented: “Utterly refreshing – unlike anything I’ve ever seen or heard before”.  You could always try an utterly refreshing coffee to go with it.
